Trincomalee

One of the finest natural harbours on earth

Best time to visitApril to September

Trincomalee sits on one of the finest deep-water natural harbours in the world — a vast, protected bay that has been coveted by colonial powers for centuries and today is home to a Tamil-speaking community that has lived here for generations, ancient Hindu temples, some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful and uncrowded beaches, and warm waters that attract blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins from March to September.

For visitors, Trincomalee offers something increasingly rare in Sri Lanka: a destination that feels genuinely undiscovered. The beaches are extraordinary. The seafood is excellent. The historic fort and the clifftop Koneswaram Temple are among the most atmospheric sites on the island. And the pace is slow, personal and completely unhurried.

Koneswaram Temple

Perched on a promontory above Trincomalee harbour, the Thirukoneswaram Kovil (Koneswaram Temple) is one of the most sacred Hindu temples in Sri Lanka — a Shaivite shrine of extraordinary antiquity that has drawn pilgrims for two millennia. The original temple was demolished by Portuguese colonisers in 1624; the current structure has been rebuilt and expanded over subsequent centuries.

The setting is extraordinary — the temple platform extending to the cliff edge, with the harbour and the Indian Ocean spreading in every direction. Sunset here, with the sea turning gold and the sounds of temple ceremony drifting across the headland, is one of the great atmospheric experiences of the north-east coast.

Beaches

The beaches around Trincomalee are among the finest in Sri Lanka — Nilaveli and Uppuveli in particular — with clear turquoise water, white sand and a fraction of the visitors who crowd Hikkaduwa or Mirissa. Pigeon Island, a fifteen-minute boat ride from Nilaveli, offers exceptional coral and excellent snorkelling.

The best conditions are from April through to September, when the north-east coast is in its dry season and the water is calm and clear.

Whale Watching

Trincomalee's waters are among the best in Sri Lanka for whale watching from March to September — with blue whales, sperm whales, killer whales and spinner dolphins all regularly encountered. The whale watching season here complements the south coast season (November to April) perfectly, making it possible to visit Sri Lanka any time of year and experience world-class marine life.

Best Time to Visit

April to September is the prime season for Trincomalee — dry, calm and at its most beautiful. The south-west monsoon that affects Colombo and the south coast during these months does not reach the east. Avoid October to January when the north-east monsoon brings significant rain.
