Visa UpdateJune 2026

Tourist Visa to Sri Lanka Currently Free

Sri Lanka has recently announced that the standard 30-day tourist visa (Electronic Travel Authorisation / ETA) is currently being offered free of charge — a welcome development for travellers planning their journey. Please note: We believe this applies to visitors from most countries, however visa rules, eligibility, and fee structures can change without notice and may vary depending on your nationality and the current diplomatic relationship between your home country and Sri Lanka. We strongly recommend verifying the current visa requirements and fees directly with the official Sri Lanka ETA portal (eta.gov.lk) or your nearest Sri Lankan embassy or high commission before making any travel arrangements. Do not rely solely on this update, as regulations can change at short notice. As always, Kerry will provide up-to-date pre-departure guidance as part of your journey planning.

Cash, Rupees & US Dollars — What You Need to Know

In Sri Lanka, cash is essential. While cards are accepted in larger hotels and city restaurants, the moment you venture beyond the main tourist hubs — into local markets, village eateries, rural guesthouses, temples, or smaller towns — cash is the only option. Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) — Your Everyday Currency The Rupee is the national currency and what you will use for the vast majority of daily transactions: tuk-tuks, street food, local markets, entrance fees, tips, and anything in smaller towns or rural areas. Keep a good supply of smaller notes (LKR 100–1,000) at all times. ATMs exist in major cities but become scarce and unreliable in more remote areas — don't rely on them. US Dollars — Useful, But Not Universal USD is widely accepted alongside Rupees in tourist areas, upmarket accommodation, national parks, and with many tour operators. In popular destinations, both currencies are commonly used side by side. However, in local villages and smaller towns, USD may simply not be recognised. Carry some USD as a practical supplement — not a replacement for Rupees. Our Recommendations: • Exchange currency at the airport on arrival or at reputable bureaus in Colombo • Carry both LKR and a modest amount of USD cash • Always have cash before heading into rural or highland areas • Notify your bank before departure to avoid card blocks • Check current exchange rates at xe.com before you travel Kerry provides a full pre-departure money briefing tailored to your specific itinerary.
