Our Commitment

Travel that gives
more than it takes.

Responsible tourism isn't a marketing label for us — it's the foundation of every journey we create. Here's how we put that into practice.

◈

Supporting Local Communities

Every journey we create directly benefits Sri Lankan communities. We work exclusively with locally-owned guesthouses, family-run restaurants, independent guides, and community-based experience providers. We avoid international chains and mass-tourism operators. When you travel with Free Spirit, your spending stays in Sri Lanka.

◉

Ethical Wildlife Experiences

We have a strict no-exploitation policy for all wildlife experiences. We do not support elephant riding, performing animal shows, or any activity that causes distress to animals. Our safari and whale-watching operators are carefully selected for their commitment to responsible wildlife tourism and compliance with Sri Lankan wildlife laws.

◫

Cultural Respect

Sri Lanka has a rich and diverse cultural heritage spanning over 2,500 years. We prepare all travellers with cultural briefings before arrival and encourage respectful engagement with local traditions, religious practices, and community customs. Our guides are from the communities you visit — they are your hosts, not your servants.

◬

Environmental Responsibility

We minimise our environmental footprint wherever possible. We encourage travellers to use reusable water bottles, avoid single-use plastics, and respect protected natural areas. We work with eco-certified accommodation where available and support businesses committed to sustainable practices.

◭

Slow & Conscious Travel

We believe in travel that gives back more than it takes. By encouraging slow travel — fewer destinations, deeper connections — we reduce the environmental and social strain of over-tourism. We actively direct guests away from overcrowded tourist sites and toward authentic local alternatives.

◮

Fair & Transparent Business

We pay our local partners fairly and on time. We do not negotiate suppliers into unsustainable pricing. We believe that fair trade in tourism means every link in the chain — from Kerry in Perth to the family guesthouse in Ella — is treated with dignity and paid appropriately for their contribution.

Our Pledge

"We promise to continue creating journeys that honour Sri Lanka — its people, its land, its stories — with the deep respect and love they deserve."
— Kerry Hayes, Founder
